From Gail McMahon descendant “It is said that when Gertrude was born she was so small she could have fitted into a pint-pot! Gertrude went into service for a family in Leicester and then went on to sell programs at Leicester Palace Theatre. She met many ‘celebrities’ of the day including Nellie Wallace. Gertrude taught herself how to play piano (well) and had a beautiful singing voice. She and her husband lived in the house next door to Lenton’s shoe shop in Coalville, this is where her sister Elsie Burton (nee Saunders) gave birth to her first child Dorothy Burton. Because Gertrude had no children she virtually brought my Aunty Dorothy up. Gertrude’s husband worked as a furnace man for Stableford’s in Coalville.”

The certificate also shows the address as New Row, Bardon Hill, Hugglescote. Joseph is duly recorded as Stone Quarrier. (Note that the 1901 census- which OMITS Elizabeth from the record for some reason – shows a different address, Cambridge Street, Coalville).”

From Gail McMahon “I think I’ve found the missing record of Elizabeth Annie Saunders in the 1901 census… when I originally found this document a year ago I disregarded it because ‘Ancestry.co.uk’ interpreted the results incorrectly. They recorded that the census record showed Elizabeth Annie Saunders as a visitor with the ‘Green family’ at 2 Long Row, Coalville, born Bardon Hill, AGED 18.
However, have a look at the census record that I’ve attached and see what you think… in the column above Elizabeth Annie, the age of the Green’s married daughter (Annie Horwood) is recorded as 27 – the number 7 has a very long ‘tail’ which extends down into the column underneath making Elizabeth Annie’s age appear to be 18 instead of 8. To confirm this, have a look further down the same record and see the writer’s other 7 at number 4 Long Row. “
Low Row a street that no longer exists was describe thus in a Leicester Univ. study “A Colliery Company school was constructed for the use of the employees’ children during the week and to serve as a Primitive Methodist Chapel on the Sabbath. This still stands as the rear part of the Ebenezer Baptist Chapel. Next to the school there was Snibston Upper Buildings, a row of cottages which led down to a group of larger managerial houses, known as Jamie’s Place, where George Stephenson’s brother James lived. Short Row stood between Jamie’s Place and the Colliery entrance, beyond which stood two further Long Rows separated by a drive which led to Snibston Grange. .

From Derek Wheatley “I have now completed my researches into Elizabeth Annie Saunders’ husband and son (I seem to remember that you told me that they had only the one child .
Elizabeth Annie’s husband was George William Garratt born in Hugglescote in 1887 (September qtr Ashby-de-la-Zouch R.D. Vol 7a Page 125). He is recorded in the 1891 Census age 3 born Hugglescote and living at Hugglescote Street, Hugglescote with his father Thomas, mother Sarah and two siblings; also in the household are his uncle Alfred, aunt Isabella, and cousins Clare and Alfred (their names are recorded as ‘Garrett’). In 1901, he is shown age 13 occupation Iron (illegible), living at Main Street, Hugglescote with his parents, one of the two siblings from 1891, plus four further siblings born after 1891 (their names are correctly recorded as ‘Garratt’).
