The wedding took place at the registry office in Ashby de la Zouch.
Witnessed by Jonah Ing and Jane Elizabeth Ing (Jonah was from Long Crendon and either a friend or relative )

The marriage wasn’t good and Amelia was in an abusive relationship with William Wells, consequently she left him and takes her youngest child Sarah Louise with her to north London (her sister Ada was married and living in Harrow RD at this time). Note: Sarah Louisa in 1911 Census living with sister Florence Mary in Leicester so this trip to London seems unlikely until after 1911 and furthermore Amelia has a child by Thomas Figg in 1909 in Kingston RD near London.
The other girls Gertrude, Florence , Ellen and Elsie were subsequently put with other families. (source Amelia’s children). We are not sure what happened to the two sons she had with Wells , William Saunders and Thomas Wells .

Sometime after arriving in North London Amelia starts a relationship with John Thomas Figg born C1883 who appears to have been 13 years younger than her. They started living together perhaps in Wealdstone?

Looks like Amelia used her birth surname in the registration rather than purger herself by using Saunders, she obviously didn,t want to use Wells .

After Joseph died of rheumatic fever at the age of 30 in 1900, Amelia Kate was living in 1901 on Cambridge Street in Coalville with her five daughters and her brother William Blincoe (who hadn’t married Jane Duck at that stage) and also her brother-in-law Frederick Towersey was living with her at that time too. Later on, Fred Towersey’s whole family was able to move from Back Way, Long Crendon to Coalville, (his wife Annie Blincoe, and her children including the oldest girl Lizzie who my grandma Elsie was very close to and my aunty Dorothy and uncle Eric used to visit later in life). Life after Joseph’s death was difficult for Amelia and she quickly formed a relationship with another man called William Wells. She had a son with him out of wedlock called William Saunders – my aunty Dorothy loved him and speaks very affectionately of ‘uncle Bill’. Amelia then married William Wells and became Amelia Wells. They had another son together called Thomas Wells. …… this relationship was not a happy one. In desperation Amelia ran away to Harrow taking with her only the youngest girl Sarah Louie (who I met before she died incidentally). Mark Wells kept the baby Thomas Wells. The eldest daughter Gertrude (aunty Gertie) went into service for a family in Leicester who were lovely to her, eventually she went on to work at the theatre in Leicester selling tickets and got to meet a few ‘celebrities’ of the day! She had a lovely singing voice and could play piano. Florence, Ellen and my grandma Elsie were put into foster homes and I think William (Saunders) the first of Mark Well’s boys was put in care too but I’m not sure. On Amelia’s death Gertrude and Elsie went to Harrow to attend the funeral making the journey with my on the train. After saying goodbye to Amelia at her funeral the daughters all returned to Coalville including Sarah Louise and the girls cried all the way home knowing it was the last time they’d see their Mother. An old man on the train tried to cheer them up with his duckhead umbrella!

However as the note shows after the death William Wells traveled down to London met John Thomas Figg and corrected the death certificate on 1st June with them both present.

James Saunders b. circa 1825 (from Chilton) and his wife Ellen b.circa 1834 (from Cuxham registered 30/04/1834) had a daughter Ellen Saunders while they were still living in Chilton in 1853 . They eventually moved to Long Crendon and went on to have 8 more children. This eldest daughter, Ellen, went on to have the boy Joseph Saunders in 1870. I have his birth cert and there is no registered father. The grandparents James and Ellen went on to raise the boy Joseph. His mum Ellen was in service the following year to a Mary Ann and William Jessop who obviously guessed her age when asked to fill in the 1871 census! James and Ellen seemed to make a habit of looking after grandchildren as they had another one living with them in 1901!!

After the family moved from Long Crendon up to Coalville, Joseph was involved in a quarry accident which left him blind in one eye. His children were always told that after this he was ‘given something to drink’ which made him ill and he subsequently died of rheumatic fever aged 30.

Long Crendon with her children Lizzie age 12 born L.C., Lewis age 7 born L.C., and Sydney age 1 born L.C. Frederick was, of course, boarding in Coalville with their son Jim in the household of Amelia Kate Saunders. I’ve also discovered that Frederick Towersey was the illegitimate son of Elizabeth Towersey; the 1871 Census very helpfully shows Fred Towersey, son of Elizabeth Towersey, and age 7 in Long Crendon.”

Frederick appears to have been illegitimate but mother is know to be Elizabeth Martha Towersey. and he took this name plus possibly the fathers surname Crook. however later in life see 1901 Census below dropped this appendage.

Other boarders at the house who were family William Blincoe and Amelia Saunders (nee Blinco) , William
Blincoe Amelia Saunders and Frederick Towersey were all from Long Crendon.
Earlier in 1894. Henry Blincoe and wife Amelia (nee Edwards)also from Long Crendon were in Coalville son Harry being recorded born there 1894 and daughter Martha Jane in 1896.

It looks like Frederick and Annie and children moved to Coalville Leicestershire about 1902 as daughter Mary Ann
Towersey born in 1902 at Coalville.

1914-15 Recorded in sons Army records as living at 75 Midland Rd. Ellistown Leics.

Note: Sisters Ada, Louisa and Fanny most likely followed their cousin Rosa Blincoe (daughter of Mark Blincoe) to Willesden. Cousin Martha Jane Blincoe (also daughter of Mark Blincoe) also moved to Kilburn and in 1903 married Wallace Pinner there.

William died 23 December 1919 in unknown circumstances. What we do know is that his name was recorded on the Chearsley War Memorial (unveiled in 1920) in the village. There is also a memorial plaque at St Nicholas Chearsley which looks to have had his name added after the initials war vistims were engraved on the plaque. Quite why this happened is a mystery and it should be noted there is no evidence of military service except these two memorials Buckinghamshire Remembers website. William J Blincoe War service page

My cousin has given permission to used this as he lives there today. Louisa and Thomas lived there until 1951, when he decided to retire and they bought a house in the village. Louisa and Thomas lived there until 1951, when he decided to retire and they bought a house in the village. Jonah Blincoe was placed at Lower Green Farm to look after it. (like a manager I suppose) I believe it belonged to a Mr.Jessop at the time. Thomas went to live there when they got married and helped Jonah on the farm. Later when Jonah retired, Thomas took over until he retired in 1953. A Mr. Gibson owned it then. In 1967 Eva’s son bought it and lives there now.”
