Msg2. I have received Constance Mary Blinco’s Birth certificate. It says she was born in Leighton Buzzard 29th August 1908 at ‘Bushey’ ? George Street. Her father was Harry Blinco who was a Carpenter, mother Florence Maud Blinco nee Panter. I looked for a marriage registration entry on Ancestry.co.uk and found a Harry Blinco Q3 1903 and Florence Maud Panter Q3 1903 both at Leighton Buzzard. This seems to be the Blincos i’m looking for. However, looking at your information regarding Harry, this seems to conflict. What do you think? Thanks,Vicky and Paul family@elvins-sanders.co.uk) This information is correct and reflected in the web page.

21. Henry George BLINKO (Mark , John )

Photograph of George Blinko in Bucks Hussars uniform. George was a labourer then coachman and in 1888-1899 was with the Royal Artillery intially full-time then on Reserve. He died in 1911 leaving Amelia to look after 6 children.
Known as George. One of 6 children, born in Aylesbury then moved to Long Crendon, Buckinghamshire with parents who came from there originally. Pre 1888 George joined the 4th Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry , then in 1988 he joined the Royal Artillery at Colchester. When married to Amelia Edwards , George moved after 1891 to Bardon Hill, Leicestershire to work as a stone quarrier. His two brothers Frederick William and Alfred Mark along with cousins William John, Amelia Kate and Annie Maria either preceded or followed Henry George to Bardon Hill Stone Quarry in the 1890’s. We do know that Henry George was in Bardon from at least 1894 -1896 as two children George Harry and Martha Jane born there , but by 1899 was working in Beaconsfield, Bucks (with Amelia, son Harry and daughter Martha Jane) Occupation; Coachman to Lord Burnham.
In 1900 there is evidence that George was with the 4th Squadron of the Royal Bucks Hussars. George and family likely moved to Wycombe sometime after 1903 (birth of son Alec Mark) and evidenced by birth of son Christopher in 1906 at Wycombe. Some time after 1906 the family finally moved back to Long Crendon and lived there until his death in 1911..

Family Memories |
| Grandson Ken Blinko writes : “Mary Eales knew Henry George in her early years – she said they used to call him “Red Henry” and that he lived in a little cottage in Windsor End at Beaconsfield and was a coachman to Lord Burnham – again I cannot confirm since Mary (my stepmother) died some years ago.” “I note your reference to the Boer War and it reminded me of a document I have seen (probably my Fathers birth certificate) which gave Henry Georges occupation as professional soldier. Also interestingly I have been talking to one of my half-brothers (Mary Eales side) and he states that he believes his youngest sister who took over the house when Mary died, has a photo of Henry George in a hussars uniform complete with little pillbox hat.” Grandson George Blinko writes:”The photo Ken mentioned of Henry Blinko in Hussars uniform, I mentioned to you that there was a picture on the wall of Grandma’s cottage which was there when Aunt Rose took over, this was quite big oval shape with a matching picture of I presume Grandma. Another interesting family repeat if Henry was a Hussar that my father should follow him on in 1922″ |

1911 Death recorded at Burts Lane, Long Crendon cause given as Synchops TB ie died while suffering lung and breathing failure .Note: Henry’s father & mother survived him for some years.
Birth 1868 Long Crendon, GRO (B) Thame 3a 589
Born in Long Crendon and of the Edwards family from Chilton, Amelia was part of a quite large group of labourers and relatives that went from Long Crendon, Bucks to Bardon Hill Quarry in Leicestershire. As described in husband George’s notes she went there in 1890’s and had first child (my grandfather) in the quarry cottages. Her uncle William Edwards from Chilton and his family preceded them to Bardon Hill and in 1881 Census, were living at Quarry Row No 25 Leicester Road .
By 1899 the Blinko’s had moved to Beaconsfield Bucks and as evidenced by birth records for children Bert, Edie and Alec and 1901 census we can place them there until at least 1903.
Sometime after 1903 they may have moved to High Wycombe as son Thomas Christopher (known as Chris) who was born in Wycombe in 1906. Daughter Amelia Harriet Rosemary (known as Rose) was born in Thame R.D. in 1909 and husband George died there in 1911.
Amelia re-married James Oxlade after death of first husband George Blinko in 1911.
Amelia’s marriage to James Oxlade was in 1913 at Long Crendon. Her last child Amelia Harriet Rose is remembered by relatives as the favourite and inherited James/Amelia’s property ‘Rose Villa” in Totteridge.
| Rose Villa Totteridge |
![]() |
| James and Amelia lived at ‘Rose Villa” opposite the Dolphin public house on Totteridge Lane High Wycombe. It seems from the beginning of their marriage, they may have moved into Rose Villa. James Oxlade from the 1901 census was previously living close by at Wood View cottage on Totteridge Lane. A bomb fell in the grounds of ‘Rose Villa” during the war and damaged the house and roof.
Photo taken by Amelia’s grandson George Blinko in 2007 |
Amelia is fondly remembered by George Blinko for her Blackbird Pie made from freshly shot birds in the back garden! Organic and abundant food supply why did this delicacy disappear from the dinner table! see below.
Family Memories |
| Grandson George Blinko writes: “Your pictures of Totteridge brought back some happy memories. The allotment that you mentioned had a very big black cherry tree on the edge of the road which you can imagine as lads what we got up to, I think the landlord of the Dolphin owned it. Did you know that Grandma,s roof got damaged by a bomb during the war?.It was in the orchard behind grandma,s that I fired my first gun, again in the cherry season my dad and others used to do sessions of bird scaring with 410 and .22 rifles. I only did it once as my mother put a stop to it. Of course in those days collecting cherries was a big industry and the men found a bit of extra pocket money. And I can still remember Grandma cooking blackbird pie, it seems a bit far fetched now a days but it was a fact.Did you ever get down into the woods where grandad had his small holding?, its years since I last went but he used go down two sometimes three times to feed his live stock with his yoke on his shoulders carrying the buckets. Another memory that comes back of the Dolphin is Sundays in the summer father would go up to see grandma in the mornings and look for birds nests, then late afternoon we would all go to the woods to see these nests and end up in the Dolphin” Grandson Ken Blinko writes: “My Mother died when I was 4 years old (1926) and from the age of 4 to 7 my brother Ron and I lived in the cottage at Totteridge with Grannie Oxlade and Auntie Rose.(incidentally it was then known as Crendon Cottage).
When I was 7 my Dad married Elizabeth Mary Eales and Ron and I moved to Beaconsfield to live with them.”
“Another little conundrum puzzling me regards the ‘Wood View’ in the James Oxlade census.
Both Rose Villa and Wood view are shown, with James Oxlade family living in the latter.
I know that Gran Oxlade lived in the former since I can remember addressing mail to No.2 Rose Villas and also seem to recall seeing a little plaque high up on the front with Rose Villas on it. From the census numbering it would appear that the Wood view were possibly the cottages at the bottom of the dip in the lane as it went towards Totteridge Common, these were on the right as none existed on the left till you got to the common. Would it be fair to assume then that James moved up to Rose Villa when he married Amelia Edwards?”

1911? Bible gifted to Mrs Blinko

This bible was found in the possessions of Martha Jane Blinko oldest daughter of Amelia see George Blinko (nephew) comments from e-mail September 2009.
“I came across this handwriting in a old bible that I found up in the loft it has been there since we moved down here 16 years ago. It came from My aunt Pegs (Martha Jane ) when her and Arthur decided to move to Ascot I was asked by their solicitor to get rid of anything in the house that they did not want to take, hence the photo’s. The bible is bit tattered but had a cutting of my dad from the Bucks Free Press about his death and just the details as I sent in email.
Notes :
Hannah Almond a widower (husband William is written as first entry died in 1898) was living next door to Amelia in the 1901 Census and so it can be speculated that sometime before or after her death in 1909, Amelia was given this bible. The date of the gifting 3/10/1911 has been corrected to 3/10 1893 not sure what this the significance is of this date is. Still seems likely this was either to commerate death of Hannah Almond in 1909 or Amelia becoming a widow in 1911.
James Almond was given the bible in 1906 and at that time was living at Burtley Cottages Beaconsfield , he was however born in Thame near long Crendon. James Almond was in Thame in 1911 as was parents Amon James and Elizabeth ant it may have been them that passed on the bible .
