William Norvell Ward was appointed to the U. S. Military Academy at West Point, at the age of twenty, and was there a class-mate of Gen. Robert E. Lee, with whom, as well as with Jefferson Davis, who was in the class above him, he kept up a life-long friendship. During ‘his cadetship, he was much impressed by the preaching of Mr. Parks, who visited West Point, and in company with Leonidas K. Polk, afterwards Bishop of Louisiana, and Lieutenant-General, C. S. A., he left the Military Academy to enter the ministry of the Protestant Episcopal Church.

- 12 September. At Age 56 years enlists with the 55th Virginia Infantry as a Major. From an obituary”At the opening of the war, he yielded to the solicitations of Gen. Lee, and other friends, who knew that he had received a military education. He entered the Confederate Army, and was appointed by Gen. Letcher, Major in the 55th Virginia Infantry, in which capacity he served, and as Commandant of Fort Lowery, near Tappahannock

- 1 May . Discharged and dropped from rolls.
Note in this year son William N Jnr was to die of wounds. Despite this William snr was instrumental in getting his son Charles released from Union prison in Washington and likely also to have encouraged him to serve with the 9th Virginia Cavalry in June of 1863. Eight days into his service he was killed in action. This apparently left William snr a changed man. from an obituary After the death of ‘two sons, a brother and many other relatives near to him and dear, who were killed in battle, he became very much changed. “He was, throughout the remainder of his life,” writes a relative, “like one who walked it a dream: His mind was strong and vigorous, when any occasion roused him up, and it was said that one of his most powerful speeches was made in the last Convention before his death. Ordinarily, however, he looked, as if he were living in the far-away past.”Sources
