June 24-July 7. Dix’s Peninsula Campaign . The 144th NY Infantry joined Dix’s Division made up of mostly north eastern forces and took part in a failed attempt to siege Richmond the base of General Lee
General John Adams Dix was born in Boscawen, New Hampshire in 1798. He was too old to serve in the field in the war but was a significant Generalin Union Army HQ operations and this division of troops named after him

July 13-22. Pursuit of Lee to Berlin, Md. Following General Robert E. Lee’s failure to defeat the Union Army at the Battle of Gettysburg (July 1–3, 1863), he ordered a retreat through Maryland and over the Potomac River to relative safety in Virginia. The 144th NY Infantry pursued Lee’s Army which crossed the Potomac at Williamsport the 144th stopping at the Potomac at Berlin (Now Brunswick MD)
August 1-10. Moved to Folly Island. S. C.
August 11-September 7.Siege of Forts Wagner and Gregg, Morris Island, S. C., and operations against Fort Sumpter and Charleston . Most likely that Nathan took part in these unsuccessful attempts on Confederate defences. He may well have been wounded and succumb to infection on 22 September
