Introduction
Alfred Blinco is a much discovered and written about Blinco, His descendants thrive in Queensland and elsewhere and so he and his brother Henry (who went to Western Australia) have an enormous amount written about them. I will use this page as a place for storage of articles and materials already written and of course produce the customary timeline below. I do not plan to do any research of my own at this point as I believe we have a lot of knowledge of his life and descendants. Suffice to say I have done an extensive research on descendants that served in the two world wars and provide an index to those pages below. In 2026 Rob wallis one of Alfred descendants researching him wrote that he has seen on may occasions that Alfred is referred to as Alfred William , without in his reserach finding any tangible evidence of the middle name, he had asked the Cemetery that Alfred is busied in to drop all reference to the William name. So for this reason he is called Alfred only in this document and the Blencowe TNG database.

The Voyage
The voyage of Alfred Blinco (aged 18) aboard the General Hewitt iwas fast and given it was an old convict ship it made very good time. This specific 1854 journey was a significant “Assisted Passage” mission for the fledgling Moreton Bay settlement (now Brisbane).
Alfred’s journey was marked by a fast passage across the ocean, followed by a frustrating and dangerous arrival.
- Departure: 25 August 1854 from Southampton, England.
- Arrival at Moreton Bay: 23 December 1854.
- Duration: 107 days at sea.
- The Arrival Crisis: Upon reaching Moreton Bay, the ship was met with “boisterous weather and violent storms.” Because of the severe conditions, the 381 weary passengers—including Alfred—were forced to wait at the bar of the Brisbane River for an additional week before they could safely be landed.
- Passenger Entry: On the official shipping list, Alfred’s name was recorded as “Alfred Blenco.”
First Job
Alfred was 18 years old. His records provide a vivid snapshot of his physical appearance and prospects:
- Description: He was described as having a sandy complexion, blue eyes, and brown hair.
- Literacy: He could read but could not write (he signed his marriage certificate later in life with a cross).
- Employment: Under the Assisted Immigration Act, Alfred had to “take service” to repay the cost of his passage. He was hired as an agricultural laborer almost immediately.
- First Job: Shortly after landing, Alfred and five shipmates were engaged to work at Normanby Station, located outside Ipswich.
